Over more than 15 years of landscaping in London we have worked on every kind of boundary the city throws up — narrow terrace gardens in Wood Green reached only through the house, long rear boundaries in Barnet, and new-build estates in Enfield where the developer’s original fencing has already started to fail. Pressure-treated softwood as standard, with concrete posts and gravel boards offered wherever the boundary is exposed or the ground stays wet — that combination is what keeps timber out of the soil and makes a fence last.

The site visit
We measure the run, check the post line and ground, and look at access before quoting. If a repair will do, we say so. Knowing whether materials come through the house or down a side return changes the price, so we check rather than assume.

Itemised: materials, labour, removal and disposal of the old fence separated out. You can see what a change of post type or fence height does to the figure, and decide before committing.

Disposal
Old fencing, posts and broken-out concrete are taken away as part of the job unless you ask to keep them. Timber goes to recycling where the material allows it.

If the price has to change
The agreed figure is what you pay. If something turns up mid-job that genuinely changes the work — buried concrete, a collapsed footing, a boundary that is not where it looked — we stop and talk to you before doing anything that costs more.

What makes a Fence
last in London
Most fences fail in the same few places. These are the details that decide whether a boundary stands for five years or twenty-five — worth knowing whoever ends up building it.

Post depth, not panel quality
A fence fails at the posts. The working rule is that roughly a quarter to a third of the post length goes into the ground — so a 6ft fence wants a post around 8ft, set about 600mm deep. Shallow posts are the single most common reason a fence leans after its first serious gale, and they are invisible once the job looks finished.

Keeping timber out of the soil
Timber rots where it stays wet, which is the few inches at ground level. A gravel board takes that contact instead, and is cheap to swap when it eventually goes. Concrete gravel boards remove the problem entirely. Fences built with boards sitting straight onto soil are the ones we get called back to first.

Wind load and gaps
A solid fence is a sail. That matters on exposed North London boundaries and anywhere on a ridge. Closeboard copes better than a prefabricated panel because the boards are fixed individually and flex rather than lever the whole bay. Where wind is a real problem, a hit-and-miss or slatted top section lets air through and takes load off the posts.

Sloping gardens: stepped or raked
On a slope a fence is either stepped (bays stay level, tops form a staircase) or raked (the fence follows the ground). Panels can only be stepped, which leaves triangular gaps at the bottom of each bay. Closeboard can be raked, which is usually what people want on a noticeable slope and a common reason to choose it.

Pressure treatment and cut ends
Pressure-treated timber is only protected to the depth the treatment reached. Every cut made on site — trimming a post, cutting a rail to length — exposes untreated wood. Those cuts need end-grain preservative before assembly. It takes minutes and is routinely skipped.

Access decides the price
London gardens are often reached only through the house or down a narrow side return. That governs how materials arrive, whether spoil and old concrete can be barrowed out, and how long the job takes. It is the factor most likely to make two identical-looking fences cost different amounts, which is why we look before quoting.
